Not many people outside China have heard of Chongqing, yet it is the fastest-growing metropolis in the world. At the moment it looks a bombsite, but by 2020 it will have been transformed into a vast commercial and industrial hub.
The Chinese Government has already spent £ 114 billion in the past seven years on roads, bridges and dams to revitalise the western heartland of the country, and turn Chongqing into China’s version of Chicago. Reporter Ramita Navai and producer Nick Sturdee meet the city’s new billionaires – and the farmers who have been dispossessed, the homeowners who have been evicted and the migrant workers who are being exploited to create this economic powerhouse.
