Reporter Hebe Johnson works undercover as a 999 call handler to investigate the pressures facing overstretched ambulance services.
With services facing a record level of demand, Hebe Johnson discovers patients facing dangerous delays and having to choose between waiting for an ambulance or risk making their own way to hospital. Some callers in pain are being told an ambulance ‘is being arranged’ when staff are actually deciding whether they need one. Targets are routinely missed and one night, Dispatches witnesses the service under such strain that it is forced to implement a ‘No Send’ policy where patients who aren’t critically ill are refused an ambulance. As winter approaches, the film asks if this now the new normal.
