Reporter Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Director Karim Shah travel to Mali, where continual fighting and the growing threat of Islamist extremism has severely impacted tourism and threatened the upkeep of historic sites and cultural treasures of global significance.

The Unreported World team meets a group of men known as “The Hunters”. Traditionally, they used to track animals to feed their communities. Now they hunt Jihadi extremists linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State who control the north of the country, and want the rest of Mali too. The hunters say they have become the protectors of their people and are doing what the army failed to achieve. But groups like this have also been accused by the government of atrocities and massacres in villages suspected of harbouring Jihadis.
